Walk For Your Health

I love walking. It is a completely stress-free way to exercise for me, and I love that it is much gentler on my joints than running or other high impact exercises. While I don't use walking as my main way to exercise, I still love to walk outside when the weather is nice as a way to burn extra calories, enjoy nature, and relax.

I highly recommend using pedometers for walking, if you use walking as your main form of exercise. They count each of your steps and help you gauge how far you walk from day to day. I think they are really fun to use, because you get to see all the steps you are taking, not just on your walks, but all throughout the day. Since I am a bit of a competitive person, I have fun being competitive against myself. From one day to the next, I try to outdo my own records and get more and more steps daily.

If you are an avid walker, and want to burn more calories, try pumping your arms at your sides to get your upper body involved like the picture above. If you really want a challenge, hold light weights in your hands as you pump them and walk. Another way to challenge yourself is to add in short intervals of 10-20 seconds of running or sprinting to get your heart rate up and burn mega calories!

Whatever type of walking you like to do, keep it up! It is a great way to get your body moving, burn calories and reduce stress. Walk, walk, walk!

  1. I do enjoy walking also, I find it very relaxing. I usually walk around my building for a half hour on my lunch time at work and go up and down the stairs for extra exercise.

    1. Perfect, Maryann! Adding the stairs is a great way to get your heart rate up and tone those legs!

  2. I love to walk, but we live out in the country and in this area, walkers and bikers are targets. Add that to the dogs running loose, and it just isn't a good place to walk. Driving the 5 to 10 miles to town seems a bit ridiculous. We have a treadmill which I really need to dig out and start using. I was using it and trying to read while I walked. Didn't work too well, I fell off a few times. I will have to try audiobooks instead.

    1. I understand completely. We used to live out in the country and encountered the same problems. The treadmill is a good alternative. Just no more falling off! :-)
