Where To Go For Help With Addictions

So, you might be wondering why I am bringing up addiction to all of you, my healthy, happy readers? Don't get me wrong, while I do think you are all working on being your best self and getting healthy, I know that nobody is perfect and we all have our struggles each and every day. That is why I want to talk about addiction with you today.

Historically, addiction has been defined as physical and psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin and other drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical milieu of the brain.

But.....addiction can also be viewed as a continued involvement with a substance or activity despite the negative consequences associated with it. Pleasure and enjoyment would have originally been sought; however, over a period of time involvement with the substance or activity is needed to feel normal.

Chances are that those definitions of addiction sound familiar - either for you or someone you love. I can even pinpoint little addictions I have in my own life. The thing is - there is freedom from the trapped feeling of addiction. We don't have to live feeling like we are under the control of some substance, drug, or unhealthy habit.

  1. I think a lot of us have little addictions that aren't necessarily unhealthy it's just something we can't control. The problem comes about when they begin to affect those around us that we love in a negative way. I have a "running addiction" that I have been able to control because I know that if I don't I will hurt my body. I also make sure that when I run it's at a time when is least disruptive to my family life. I know that it's not on the same level as an alcohol or drug addiction, but some people can still allow it to destroy a family.

  2. We use the word addiction so often, even in jest. The truth is we all have our own addictions, some little and some serious. When they are serious, we need to make sure we face them and get the good quality help we need.
