Laura's Wholesome Junk Food Interview and Giveaway

Remember, last week when I introduced you to some of my favorite treats of all time - Laura's Wholesome Junk Food? Then, we offered you a delicious giveaway of Oatmeal Raisin and Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies? Awesome, right?

This week, we have more treats for you!!

I want to share with you the first half of an interview I did with Dr. Laura, the owner and creator of these delicious treats. Be inspired by her words and story! Then, we are going to offer another delicious giveaway!

Me - What inspired you to move forward and actually create a company offering others healthy junk food?

Dr. Laura - I loved sweets and grew up with sweets made with wholesome ingredients that were home-made and good for me.  I thought everyone did!  I wanted everyone to have the opportunity to eat great tasting treats with the best ingredients.

Me - What are some challenges you faced as you started the company and worked to keep it's integrity?

Dr. Laura - Where do I start?  The cookies almost didn’t get made because I couldn’t find a bakery I felt comfortable with.  The small places who worked with someone new like me didn’t understand healthy baking and wanted to cut corners.  The big places wouldn’t even talk to me.  It took 2 years to find a bakery that was clean, mid-sized and willing to work with a small woman-owned business like mine was.  I didn’t know anything about running a business.  Some people were helpful.  Finding quality ingredients that are always available was hard at first.  There was a time where I couldn’t bake for over a month because the only coconut available had sodium bisulfate (an anti-caking agent and whitening agent I won’t use).  The person who sold us dates stopped selling dates so I had to find a new date supplier.

In the words of Winston Churchill, never give up, never give up, never give up.

There are always obstacles but if you know inside that you will not compromise on your principles and quality, keeping integrity is fairly easy.  But, after being in business for 11 years with no business experience prior, I have had my share of challenges and continue to learn and grow with the company.

Thanks, Dr. Laura, for your inspiring message! Now, for the goodies!
