Happy Earth Day!!! I know I am one day late, but really, every day should be an Earth Day, right?
How did you celebrate? Did you forget??? :-)
It is okay if you didn't do anything special for Earth Day, because if you are following along with our Earth Day tips, you are making a difference every day!
Here's our tip for today:
Paper towels...you probably use them. But do you know how many of them you use? For one week, keep track. Then, the next week, eliminate one roll or reduce your use.
If you are ready for the next step, go without paper towels for one entire week! Next, make it a way of life!! In our home, we have practically eliminated our paper towel use completely (even with two toddlers). I would say we use one paper towel roll every two years or so.
How did we do it? Well, when our clothes are so worn they turn into rags, we save them in a cupboard and use those rags as we would use paper towel - for spills, washing floor, cleaning windows, dusting, etc. They work well, and when the rags are dirty, we just throw them in the wash.
Remember this statistic as you start saving on paper towels, the National Resources Defense Council estimates that if every household in the US used one less roll of paper towels, 544,000 trees could be saved! Whoa!!! What a difference we can make!!

We "celebrated" by working in our gardens. We have been enjoying the asparagus and our strawberries are just starting to ripen. We worked on weeding and getting the garden ready to finish planting. We have another freeze or frost forecast for tonight. I feel sorry for the farmers who have acres of berries just starting to ripen and the vineyards who already have tiny grapes on the vine.
ReplyDeleteWe use paper towels, but a roll usually lasts well over a month. We use cloth "rags" to do most of the chores, whether in the house or in the work areas.
