Green Interior Design Book Review

On your journey to living a more natural life, you are going to be thinking about changing one of the places you spend the most time – your home. I started on my green home improvements a couple years ago, and I have enjoyed making these healthy and eco-friendly changes slowly to accommodate my budget. Some of the things I have done are tap and shower filters, air purifiers, indoor plants, organic bedding for everyone, an organic couch, water heater jacket, solid wood unfinished furniture that we either leave unfinished or paint ourselves with VOC-free paint, compost pile, non-toxic and natural cleaners, and more…

My point is, there is lots you can do, but you have to get started!

A great resource for “greening” your home is Green Interior Design by Lori Dennis. Lori Dennis, a graduate of the UCLA Interior Design program, formed Lori Dennis, Inc. in 1998, to specialize in green, sustainable interior design. Her eco-friendly projects include residential, commercial, and hospitality interiors in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Miami, Palm Springs, and New York. She is also a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and serves on the Green Committee. Lori Dennis’ desire to be part of the solution to waste and pollution in the interior design and construction fields led her to write this easy to use manual for anyone wishing to create green interiors.  With over 100 color photographs illustrating tips on how to use nontoxic, inexpensive, natural, and environmentally responsible materials to decorate, furnish, clean, and maintain your home, this guide makes creating and keeping a green household easy.

I loved this book, and I wish I would have had it when I first started improving our home. I would have saved myself a lot of time searching around the internet and stores.

She gives great tips for making your home healthier for you and safer for our planet. These aren’t just tips for the rich and famous, either. There are lots of easy, manageable ideas that you can do today. How about getting a few indoor plants to help purify your air and make a beautiful statement? She has a whole page of the best plants, what they look like, and what they will do for your home. Love it!! How about flooring? She talks about options, manufacturers, and why you should think twice about switching out your carpet.

Trust me, Lori has included everything you will need for designing your home in a more eco-friendly way.  I recommend this book as a great resource, so you can slowly take steps to go green, live healthier and even save yourself some money.

You can get your own signed copy for $24.95. It will be the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day this year!
