Time on Fire Book Review

Our lives, while scattered with events, both major and minor, are often thought of as a journey.  What happens to us along the way gives us pause, a time to react.  When we have a major event, our reaction to this event often sets up how we continue our journey.

A major life event happened to Evan Handler in the 1980s.  He was diagnosed with leukemia.  In the middle of a rising career, this vibrant, hard working, and energetic actor had to stop in his tracks and unwillingly walk a different journey.  His book, Time on Fire - My Comedy of Terrors chronicles this journey through being afraid, and finding strength.

Leukemia. Scary stuff in and of itself. Terrifying. As Evan soon found out, it is one thing to have a disease that may take your life, it is another thing to survive the treatments by both chemicals and people. This is what his book is all about. It is a very raw and conversational account of horrors and survival. It is also all about DETERMINATION and support. Can you imagine being subjected to chemical protocols that you had no way of understanding?  Those same chemicals that are supposed to "save" you kill parts of you. Can you imagine the people who are supposed to "care" for you and get you well, walk around barking, scolding, and treating you like you didn't exist past a chart?  I can now imagine this all better after reading this book. I found the book so descriptive, that I was actually cringing, reading quickly just to get past some parts. The conversational flow kept me reading and discovering why this personal journey is so importantly shared with others.

Hope. Believe through being terrified. Hang On. Clench your jaw and just do what you need to do.  Survive. Beat the Odds. Find Faith. Have Faith. Educate Yourself. Be Strong. These are all the things you need to do to get through the toughest times. However, you also need support. Evan Handler's book is most remarkable to me, because of the support of family, and those who love him. No matter what your journey is, someone else walks with you.

Time on Fire - My Comedy of Terrors by Evan Handler can be found at nationwide and online retailers.
