Uterine Fibroids and Scarf Giveaway

Have you ever heard of uterine fibroids? What are they? Is it possible you have them?

Well, let me explain a little about them today. Uterine fibroids (also referred to as myoma, leiomyoma, leiomyomata, and fibromyoma) are benign (non-cancerous) tumors that grow within the muscle tissue of the uterus. Between 20-50% of women of childbearing age have uterine fibroids. While many women do not experience any problems, symptoms can be severe enough to require treatment.

Types of uterine fibroids
You can see the four different types of fibroids in the picture above.

Fibroids range in size from very small (coin sized) to larger than a melon. A very large uterine fibroid can cause the uterus to expand to the size of a six or seven-month pregnancy. There can either be one dominant fibroid or a cluster of many small fibroids.

There are many treatment options including MR Guided focused ultrasound which destroy fibroids without incisions.

Since, I am not a fan of hysterectomy for many reasons, I appreciate that Uterine-Fibroids.org promotes MRI guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) as a preferable treatment for uterine fibroids and as a replacement for hysterectomy. MRgFUS, treats uterine fibroids non-invasively in an out patient setting without the need for general anesthesia or hospitalization, greatly reducing recovery time and the risks of side effects.

Insightec is the developer of ExAblate One for women's health and ExAblate OR (the non-invasive operating room), MRI guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery, the cutting edge of fibroid treatment without cutting.

If you or someone you love suffers from Uterine Fibroids, now you have some great information on where to go and what to do.

Now, for the fun! Insightec is giving away (1) cozy, cream-colored fleece scarf valued at $20 to (1) lucky winner!

  8. I have had uterine fibriods. During an exploratory procedure they also found pre-cancer cells, so I ended up having a full hysterectomy.
