Stress: The Problem and a Solution

Thanks to Dr. Steve Chaney, PhD, for this article on stress and how to help it naturally.

The Problem: If it seems as if your life is more stressful than ever, you're not alone. As business gets more competitive, most people are doing the jobs that 2 or 3 people did a few years ago and it's not just in business. The same phenomenon is occurring at the university and government levels. And that's if you have a job! In the present economy few people feel really secure. For working moms there's the stress of being a good mom and having the perfect career. Finally, just turn on the evening news and you hear about terrorism, war, and political infighting. No wonder the CDC tells us that 75-90% of doctor visits are stress related. Other reports tell us that 75% of adults report some stress in their daily lives.

What happens when we are under constant stress? The short-term consequences of stress are headaches, anxiety, shoulder and neck pain, and irritable bowel disease, among other symptoms. Stress also reduces levels of a brain neurotransmitter called norepinephrine. This results in feelings of anxiety and nervousness. Stress also causes the body to overproduce cortisol. This has significant long-term health consequences. Prolonged elevation of cortisol damages every organ in our body leading to depressed immune function, memory loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose levels, osteoporosis, and many other degenerative disease processes. Stress not only makes you feel bad, it is a killer.

Stress Relief Products: So let's look at what is available to solve the problems of stress. The pharmaceutical companies have offered mood elevators and tranquilizers. Not only are many of these medications habit- forming, they have serious side effects. Our competitors in the nutraceutical industry turned to kava, and consumers flocked to these products as a "safer" alternative. Shaklee looked into marketing a kava product. But they decided that kava didn't meet Shaklee's "safety profile". Shaklee set about looking for a safe alternative. Shaklee also decided that any stress product they manufactured should not just help people feel better, but it should also address the real medical problems caused by prolonged cortisol overproduction. We're glad that they waited. Now everyone is aware of the downside of kava use. Kava can cause severe liver damage and has, in fact, killed several people. It is now banned in Germany and bans are being considered in every other European country. Both Canada and the USA's FDA's have warned against its use and may soon ban it.

The Product I Recommend: Shaklee's Stress Relief Complex is a completely unique approach to stress relief. It contains the amino acids L-theanine and L-tyrosine, the plant sterol beta-sitosterol, and the Ayurvedic herb ashwaganda. The L-theanine stimulates alpha-wave production in the brain. Unlike kava and most anti-stress medications, which have sedative effects, L-theanine leaves you feeling relaxed and alert at the same time! L-tyrosine restores normal levels of norepinephrine in the brain. This reduces anxiety and leaves you feeling calm and relaxed. Ashwaganda is a natural adaptogen and has been used for stress relief in India for generations. Beta-sitosterol blunts the cortisol overproduction, thus reducing the long-term consequences of stress. Shaklee's clinical studies show that this product works. People using the product feel calmer and more relaxed while maintaining full alertness. This often occurs within 30-60 minutes. More importantly, this is the only stress product on the market that both relieves stress and reduces the long-term health consequences of stress.

Who should use Stress Relief Complex? Stress Relief Complex is the ideal product for anyone who is under stress and would like to feel calmer and more relaxed. It is the only product on the market that will allow you to relieve stress and actually feel more alert at the same time. It is also the only product that gives you short-term stress relief and also reduces the long-term health consequences of stress.
