Skin Care for Athletes

As an athlete myself, I know what a beating my skin has to take after countless hours in the sun and wind, under the shower, and now, in the cold.  I need products that restore essential nutrients and help prevent dry, cracked skin, acne breakouts, and even infections.

Skin Care for Athletes is the coolest, most unique company out there for pure, organic products for those of us who live an active lifestyle.

I love their Tri-Body Collections. The Tri-Body Collection is conveniently packaged with the 3-in-1 Tri-Body Wash to handle your shampoo, face and body wash needs. The Tri-Body Spray is a moisturizer that comes in a handy spray bottle. The Tri-Facial Serum is available for both normal-dry and normal-oily skin types.

I received the Muscle Rescue Blend Tri-Body Collection. From head to toe, this collection has got you covered. What I love most about this collection are the unique blends of ultra-pure and soothing ingredients. You will NEVER find parabens, sulfates, petrochemicals, or phthalates. Check out these fabulous ingredients:

  • 3-in-1 Tri-Body Wash - Organic Saponified Coconut and Olive oils (with retained glycerin) Jojoba oil, Guar Gum Extract, Shea Nut Butter, Aloe Vera and Rosemary extract. Essential Oils Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Peppermint and Orange.
  • Tri-Body Moisturizing Spray - Organic Sunflower Oil, Shea Nut Oil, Organic Aloe Vera Gel. Essential Oils of Eucalyptus, Orange, Rosemary, Peppermint.
  • Tri-Facial Serum (I chose the normal/dry skin type) - Organic Avocado and Jojoba oils. Organic Sea Buckthorn Berry CO2 extract. Organic hydrosols of Basil, Rosemary and Orange. Soy Lecithin. Essential oil of Basil.
Doesn't that sound super-nourishing and soothing? They are! I love all three of these products. They have very unique smells, thanks to the lovely essential oils used. I will take the healing properties and invigorating smells of essential oils over harsh, chemical fragrances any day! All the products are very nourishing, and my skin is thankful to have them!
I highly recommend this collection, and I encourage you to check out their other products and gift collections for all the active people in your life. These would make a great gift for your personal trainer, high-school athlete, runner friends, and workout buddy.

Buy the Tri-Body Collections for $46. Or buy the Better As a Collection Holiday Set (shown above) for $76, which includes a beautiful gift box, a Tri-Body Spray and Tri-Body Wash in both the Freshening and Muscle Rescue Blends, a nail brush/pumice stone and 100% cotton skin softening socks. Sounds fabulous, doesn't it?

To sweeten these products just a tad bit more, Skin Care for Athletes is offering a 25% discount until December 16th, 2011 with the code, "Your World 2011."

34 Instant Stress-Busters Review

Have you made your list yet? Have you? Have you? Come on, don't you feel a little behind? No, I'm not talking about your Christmas list, I'm talking about your New Year's resolution list..... boy you are far behind ................STOP!!!!!!!!............................This kind of thinking and pressure and list making and buying into others coercing you into thinking a certain way is NOTHING BUT STRESS!

Quick Tip #1---Take a Deep Breath! (then, read on)

Did you know that Stanford Medical School and the World Health Organization agree that stress causes 85-95% of all illness and disease? I had no clue that this number would be thought by anyone to be this high. Think about that...not germs, not DNA abnormalities, not even what we eat causes more illness and disease than stress. Stress....something we can control for ourselves, without relying on others.

Aila Accad knows something about this. As a registered nurse, her job allowed her to day in and day out see people with illnesses and diseases. As a life-long caretaker of others, she, too, became absolutely, without a doubt, STRESSED OUT! Because she never took the quick fix, and always had taken things into her own hands, she started seeking information and techniques to help her combat her own stress. Being the caretaker that she is, she knew she had to share what she learned, and what helped her, with the rest of the world.

34 Instant Stress-Busters is a guide, workbook, and step-by-step self help, and self-repair book. Don't worry, it's super easy to read, and efficiently packs what you need to do in 112 pages. The book is divided into chapters, each with instructions on what to do. But, do you HAVE to do each chapter? Nope. Just randomly pick one if you wish, and do it. You can find this fantastic book online for $12.95 at Amazon. What I believe makes her information work is that not only does she tell you what to do and how to do it, she tells you WHY it works. This is perfectly de-stressing if you are like me! I still haven't stopped asking "Why" regarding everything.....maybe that's how I got stressed out......
I'm turning over a new leaf...I am going to Bust this Stress once and for all. I've started my New Year's resolution in November! I am not doing it alone though, I am getting help from 34 Instant Stress-Busters. Thank You Aila Accad for writing this book! (Quick Tip #34-Be Grateful).

Ornaments with Love Review

I love personalized gifts. I love giving them, and I love getting them! I think they make the gift just that much more special.

Ornaments with Love is the best place to shop for personalized ornaments this Christmas, in my opinion! For the past 16 years, Ornaments with Love has taken their experience and applied it to selling personalized Christmas ornaments in Connecticut and Washington, DC area malls, and on the Internet.

Here is what makes them the best:
• Their ornaments are the very best available from multiple suppliers.

• Everything is really organized and you can shop by any category imaginable.

• Orders usually ship within 1 to 2 days.

• Personalizing is free and "Order Processing & Customer Care" are their #1 Priority.

My experience with Ornaments with Love was only positive! I received the Noah's Ark Ornament or Frame.
Personalized Noah's Ark Ornament or Frame Christmas Ornament image

I love how you can use it for an ornament during the holiday season and a picture frame when the tree gets put away. I personalized my ornament as a very special gift for my godson. It was super easy to personalize it, and it turned out exactly how I pictured it - very cute!

I highly recommend giving a personalized gift from Ornaments with Love this season. It is not stressful, doesn't involve going out in the busy stores, and makes a truly unique gift!

Words To Sweat By Review

As I work with my fitness clients every day, there is one thing that I know must be there for a good workout - Motivation! There has to be something pushing them forward to do their best. We all need to be reminded to work hard, and Words to Sweat By has come up with a fun way to do just that!

Words to Sweat By is a new, fun, motivational fitness accessory brand that incorporates powerful words of wisdom to help keep that flab off of our abs this holiday season and throughout the year. They make great good-for-you gifts for everyone on your list!

They have an huge variety of themes, from spinning to yoga to running. Plus they also have word mantra t-shirts, tanks, and gift packages.

My favorite holiday package is the Body in Motion package. The mantra of Exert. Hydrate. Repeat. is featured on a really cute t-shirt, towel, key chain and reusable snack bag. This all fits into the lime green tote, which  you can use as a reusable grocery bag. This holiday package is a special price of $40, which is a really affordable gift for someone you love!

They also sell all of those products individually with tons of different mantras. Here are a few of my favorites-
Dancing Towel
Squat Towel
Cookie Towel

I love Words To Sweat By, don't you? Their sense of humor mixed in with their awesome motivational phrases is just what we all need to stay on track with our workouts! Shop all their products to find some great stocking stuffers or a great gift for your loved ones. While you are there, check out their blog and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

750 Best Appetizers

Being healthy does not mean skipping meals, nor does it mean that you should sacrifice enjoying any part of the meal. I used to think of appetizers as something you should either skip to save calories, or something you should indulge in because they do not come around that often. However, in my quest to get healthy, I realized I have to look at everything a little differently. Maybe there is a middle ground when it comes to appetizers?

750 Best Appetizers got me rethinking my approach to food. With the holidays here, we all know that appetizers are on the minds (and plates) of everyone who cooks, plans, and enjoys parties. With 750 recipes to choose from, we are off to a good start to finding something we enjoy.
Here’s what I did to review this book: First, I grabbed a pad of sticky notes and handed it to my pickiest eater-my 13 year old. He had to go through the entire book, and mark all of the recipes that he would be willing to eat. WOW! He had to get a second pad out. Then, we chose 3 recipes each from a different section of the book (there are 16 sections) and went shopping. I found it quite simple to shop for mostly organic ingredients! Then, we made a meal out of the choices. This is what we made:

From Crackers, Crostini, Toasts and Pizza we made: Not-Your-Average Garlic Bread. This vegetarian friendly food really was above average! With only a handful of common ingredients, and only 2 steps to making it, my 12 year old tackled the task. It turned out great….hot, bubbly cottage cheese inside a loaf of Italian bread…of course, then there is the garlic; we all know my house was smelling great!

From Sticks and Picks, my son chose Bacon Wrapped Sausage Rolls…uh oh, that doesn’t sound too healthy…But, we made it better by using hormone-free turkey sausage and natural bacon. We also limited the amount we ate. That’s what it’s all about - moderation and modification.

From Panini, Sandwiches, and Tartines, we made Mini Falafel Sandwiches. What? I never even had falafel! Why did he choose this? I think he just liked the name. Turns out, these get praise from me because the main ingredient in falafel are chickpeas - a fiber and protein packed bean. I found a new meat free dish.

We only tried 3 of the 750 recipes. We picked out over a 100, and started a new weekly goal of making a whole meal of appetizers. Next week, we are testing all vegan and/or vegetarian recipes. Doesn’t Pizza with Grape Jelly and Walnut Hummus on red pepper strips sound yummy?

Do you have a cook or a picky eater on your gift list? I think you should consider getting them 750 Best Appetizers by Robert Rose Publishing. It’s easy to find at nationwide retailers, and online. I’m sure they will enjoy the book, and who knows, maybe even start a new weekly tradition!

CLEAN Momma Review

I am hooked on exercise. I have been leaving my house to work out 3-4 times a week for the past year or so. I’d like to work out some more, but, find myself less than motivated to do so at home. Well, until now. Yesterday, I received CLEAN Momma DVD to review. This video by Carolyn Barnes teaches you how to get lean while you clean.

I popped in the video to see what it was all about. First, you should see Carolyn! I have never admired someone’s arms so much! This momma is buff! From the start, her big smile and quirkiness had me interested. She is really smart too. Here are a few things she taught me through her video:

First and foremost, being fit is like a triangle, multitasking and diet build the sides, but your mindset is the base. You have to get your mind set towards fitness! She teaches you to spread out your house work fitness throughout your day.

Carolyn walks you through her top ten exercises. Some of my favorites are the rag drag, relocating lunges and counter top kick-outs. Today, I found myself doing a lot of rag drags, which means you either put your feet on rags (for wood floors) or in bags (for carpets) and slide your legs out (10 on each side) while doing dishes or laundry…..try it, you won’t want to stand still while doing chores any more.

She also encourages you to stretch….lots of times throughout the day. One of the best things I learned from her was that you should work out more often. Try combining it with what you are doing - whether it is laundry, dishes, or vacuuming. One of my favorite tips was to challenge yourself by doing 10 push ups on the counter every time you put something in the sink….she thinks you can easily get in 200 per day. For arms like hers, you bet I will try!

Check out the CLEAN Momma DVD for yourself, along with workout and diet guide.

Kettle Cuisine Review and Giveaway....Soup's On!

This past month has been pretty exciting for me personally! I officially started writing for this blog, and for the first time in my life, took a huge step in improving my health by reading, understanding, and applying what is right for me. After some consideration, I started eating gluten, dairy, sugar, and processed free foods. Whoa! That’s radical and limiting……actually, not so much.

Admittedly, grocery shopping has been a little bit of an adjustment, my “go-to” items of pasta and starches have been replaced by new “go-to” items organic spinach and almonds. I was feeling lonely though….the cold weather was creeping in, and that always means one special thing to me: Soup!

Luckily for me and my family, I found Kettle Cuisine. I didn’t even open the box and I started to get a warm feeling from this frozen food. The company was founded in 1986 by Jerry Shafir, who wanted to create great tasting, all natural soups for top quality restaurants. What really warmed me was the fact that Jerry started making soup when he learned that his daughter, Kate, had to maintain a gluten-free diet…..Awwwww, the great things that come out of love!

But how do they taste? Wonderful….honestly, wonderful. It’s really not a wonder though, because all Kettle Cuisine products are certified gluten free, created without artificial ingredients, and come in 10 chef inspired recipes. I tried the Chicken Chili, Angus Beef Chili, Roasted Vegetable, Tomato with Garden Vegetables, and the Thai Curry Chicken varieties. I knew that I loved the soups, but, what about someone who is not on a gluten free diet? How would the average Joe like them? I handed off the New England Clam Chowder to the guy next door…in this case, Fred, who I learned had a not-so-average love of chowder. He promptly called me up, and said, “Yeah, that soup… that was good!”

Like Fred, I am sure you will love their soups. We are lucky enough to be able to offer a special give away to our readers.
Here’s how you can win a cooler bag from Kettle Cuisine with coupons for 3 FREE soups of your choice, plus extra money saving coupons to give to your family and friends (or your neighbor):

Choosing the Healthiest Turkey

Yesterday, when I was grocery shopping, I saw a huge commotion around the meat cooler section. The grocery store was having a huge sale on big fat turkeys, probably laden with antibiotics and added colorings or artificial ingredients. That made me quite sad. I can't help but think that if people knew exactly what they were buying when they grab the cheapest food, they might think twice...Education is key!

So, I want to give you a little help, so you can find the healthiest turkey this Thanksgiving.

Let's clear up the labeling confusion -

Natural - This means that the turkey contains no artificial flavor or flavoring, coloring ingredient, chemical preservative, or any other artificial or synthetic ingredient, and is minimally processed. This label must explain the use of the term "natural"(e.g. no added colorings or artifical ingredients). At the very least, please choose a natural turkey.

No Antibiotics - The term "no antibiotics added" may be used on labels for poultry products if the producer sufficiently documents to the Food Safety and Inspection Service that the animals were raised without antibiotics. One step better, in my opinion.

No Hormones - Hormones are not allowed in raising poultry, thank goodness. Therefore, the claim "no hormones added" cannot be used on the labels of poultry unless it is followed by a statement that says, "Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones."

Organic - Here is the gold standard, in my opinion. The term "organic" details the methods, practices, and substances that can be used in producing and handling organic crops and livestock, as well as processed products. The Final Rule for the new organic standard specifically prohibits the use of genetic engineering methods, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge for fertilization.

If you want to go one step better, find a local, organic turkey. You might find one at your local co-op. Or you can do what I do - buy a local, organic chicken or two. They taste just as good!

Have a happy Thanksgiving, knowing you are feeding your guests the healthiest turkey yet!

To Your Health!
Cara

Tough Traveler Review

My husband and I love to get away by exercising....we walk, we bike, we hike, we cross country ski.....But, sometimes, the best places to get away, are really AWAY. Deep in the woods at my favorite park, there are no first aid stations or drinking fountains. That means I have to take with me a few things that I know we might need. Ordinary fanny packs are great for a few things, but, I never quite found one that would hold our water bottles.
Recently I found the Tough Traveler Hugger. Just large enough to carry the essentials like keys, a map, and some extra sunblock, it won't weigh you down. The best part is that there are two holders for water bottles! That means only one of you has to carry the pack, or if you are by yourself, you won't run out of water. Love it. The function is great, but what about the form? How's it going to hold up to miles of walking and the cold weather from skiing?

Turns out, Tough Traveler thought of that. They are a company that has been in business selling products entirely made in the USA for over 40 years. Their product line is amazing! They sell baby carriers, messenger bags, backpacks and luggage. They outfit EMS drivers and even sell cases for guitars and my skiis. Tough Traveler knows what they are doing. All of their products are made with attention to detail, such as tough seams and comfortable straps. One of the greatest things I learned from the Tough Traveler website is that everything they make is right here in the USA. That means that they have to follow all labor and environmental regulations.
I love businesses that care. I love it even more when I see pride in workmanship throughout all of their products. Tough Traveler is one of my new favorite go-to companies for all my carrier needs. It will be yours too. Looking for a great gift? Head on over to their website! I'm sure you will find something for everyone on your list.

Cheapestees Review

As a woman who lives half of my life in fitness clothing, I am always on the lookout for the coolest new fitness clothing around. That usually means that it is quite expensive, but super cute and great quality. What if there was a company out there that sold super cute, great quality fitness gear at HUGE discounts? I would say that would be heaven!!! Well, guess what? There really is such an awesome company.

CheapesTees - The Lowest-Priced, Name Brand T-Shirts On Earth!

CheapesTees is my new all-time favorite place to shop for the coolest, high quality fitness clothing! Not only do they carry practically every tee known to mankind, but they also have super cute pants, socks, hats, and kids clothing too! I was in heaven when I saw their organic/eco-friendly section. They really do have it all, and at prices we can all afford!

As I browsed the women's tees, I realized that this site is one I have to add to my husband's favorites on his computer as a "shop for your wife here" kind of hint. I finally chose the Bella Vintage Dolman T-Shirt, which is super cute, super comfortable, and only $13.94 from Cheapestees.

Bella Vintage Dolman T-Shirt

Then, these really comfortable Bella Ladies' Stretch Yoga Pants caught my eye. Had to have them too!

Bella Ladies' Stretch Yoga Pants

And can you believe this? They are only $22.94. See why I am loving Cheapestees, and see why I had to put it on this Good-For-You Gift Guide.

I know many of you have probably already abandoned this review to head over and find your favorites, but for those of you who are still with me, I also want to mention that there is FREE SHIPPING on orders over $69. So, I suggest you buy a couple new things for your friends and family, and then sneak in a few of your faves for yourself. Give yourself a fun new workout tee or outfit every time you hit a fitness goal!

Shop Cheapestees and start crossing off all those names on your holiday shopping list. Have fun saving money and looking great for your next workout!

Reuseit Eco-Friendly Products Review

During the holidays, there is a lot of waste. Think about all those parties, all those plastic utensils, styrofoam and paper plates and cups, paper napkins and paper towels, all that waste...

This year, let's not just think about it. Let's do something about it. Reuseit has awesome products to help you lessen the waste, save money, and live greener.

One thing I have been doing lately is switching out all my paper napkins and paper towels for cloth versions. After browsing the eco-friendly Personal Care products, I decided I just had to have the People Towels Reusable Hand Towels, 100% Organic Cotton.

I just fell in love with this cute design, and it's uses are endless. From washing messy faces to cleaning up spills, this hand towel is great and is going to save a lot of trees and paper towels.

After finding this cute hand towel, I went to check out the Kitchen products. This is where I got even more excited, because I knew I had to have the Reuseit Hemp and Organic Cotton "Everything Cloth", Set of 4.
With having two kids and a husband who seems to spill half of his food on his lap, (sorry honey) we use a lot napkins. I have switched over to cloth napkins, but we always seem to run out. Since we added these to our collection, we never run out and hopefully will never have to use paper napkins again.

This holiday season, give a gift that keeps on giving. Reuseit's products are not only good for the planet, but they are good-for-you, since they are going to save you a lot of money! With almost all their products under $20,  you are going to love shopping from Reuseit.

Celtic Complexion Review

Are you sensitive? I am. I'm not talking about crying at the drop of a hat or getting upset easily. I'm talking about your skin. I have Polish, German, and Irish blood...My eyes are blue, my hair is blonde, and my skin is white with patches of pink. I love my DNA, but my skin reacts poorly to anything it doesn't like, and that is pretty much everything.

Jennifer Devlin felt the same way. In her early 20's she started suffering from rosacea. Rosacea is referred to as the "Curse of the Celts". If you have rosacea, the capillaries on your chin, nose, and cheeks are visible. Jennifer decided to become a professional makeup artist so she could learn how to hide her rosacea. After years of using heavy makeup to conceal her problem, she consulted a holistic esthetician to help her heal. By eliminating all of the toxins, and only using pure, organic products, she was able to heal her skin. This inspired her to become an esthetician, and create her own product so that she could help others with the same issues.

Celtic Complexion is a beautiful line of all natural, all organic skin care solutions. Every product is hand crafted without Water, Parabens, Alcohol, Dyes, Fragrances, GMO's, or Synthetic Chemicals. Using just the smallest amount of this product will produce results.

I have used the Celtic Complexion Cream over the past 3 days. I honestly can say, I have never felt such velvety skin. There is no water in these products. That means that there is nothing to evaporate. Once you put the cream on, it stays on; it doesn't fade away.

I have also used the Peppermint Lemongrass Natural Lip Balm, and find that my lips are not parched anymore; they are smooth and soft.

Although I do not have rosacea, I do get patches of itchy skin on my arms. Sometimes the itch is so bad, that it wakes me up at night, and my scratching leaves scars. I just applied 6 drops of the Calming and Soothing Serum to an annoying patch, and to my amazement, the irritation left immediately.
In my teens and into my twenties, I was a cosmetic, "if you make it, I will try it junky". I wanted every lotion and potion out there to hit my skin. Now, heading out of my thirties, I realized, just like the inside of my body, my skin has had enough of the toxins. Dioxins, Parabens, Glycol, and Phthlalates, commonly found in many products are just plain wrong for your body. Just as I am starting to feed my insides only natural, mostly organic foods, I am also feeding my skin the same. I found my new go-to, this-is-all-I-will-ever-need skin cream, sunscreen, and lip balm. I am heading over to Celtic Complexion to purchase the Youth Infusion 7 Serum.

Luckily for me and our readers, Jennifer has offered us a generous discount! When you enter the code YOURWORLD, you will get 20% off until November 30th. You need to put this on your gift giving list for anyone who suffers from rosacea, or who wants to have the softest skin possible.

5 Easy Ways To Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Thanks to your responses to my question about holiday eating, I know many of you have a hard time keeping up with your normal routine of healthy eating and exercising during the holidays.  I want to share with you my top 5 ways to stay healthy and enjoy the holidays!

1-      Remember, your stomach shouldn't be a waste basket. This doesn't mean you can't eat your absolute favorite treats. But, remember to be picky about what you put in your mouth and how much of it you consume.

2-      Don’t forget about your goals. Studies on personal achievement have shown that people reach 80% of the goals they put on paper. Set reasonable, detailed goals and remember, just because you mess up once doesn’t mean you should quit. I always tell my clients to post them on their refrigerator to keep them in mind every day.

3-      Plan all your workouts in advance. You know your schedule is going to get hectic over the holidays, so stay on track by planning your schedule in advance. Put it on a wall calendar or make “appointments” in a daily planner for ALL your workouts. I am offering a 4-week Boot Camp right now to help my clients stay on track with their goals. If you pay for classes in advance, chances are you won't miss them!

4-      Eat in moderation. Just because it is the holidays, doesn't mean your body wants you to add 500 more calories to it each day. Sometimes all we need of our mom's apple pie or chocolate fudge is a bite or two. Remember, a moment on the lips - forever on the hips.

5-      Remind yourself why your health is important to you. Keep your standards high, but don’t expect other people’s standards to be as high as yours. Don’t let their negative influence drag you down. When they offer you seconds on dessert, politely say, “No thank you.”

Easier said than done, right? Just take one step at a time. Focus on one or two of these ideas at a time. Once you conquer one, you will feel even more confident and want to try a few more.

To Your Health!
