Terro Fruit Fly Trap Review and Giveaway

I think fruit flies are the most annoying bug. They are so small and fast, you can never get rid of them! Plus, they think they can buzz all in your personal space, like your ears and nose. Yuck!

At our house we have tons of fresh fruit and veggies, plus we have a little compost container, and all of that causes fruit flies to love our house. That is why I was really excited to try out the Terro Fruit Fly Trap. For those of you who are working on healthier cooking by using more whole foods, you are going to love keeping the fruit flies away.

Terro, the industry leader in home pest control products, has introduced a great, highly effective new product -the Terro Fruit Fly Trap. Terro’s Fruit Fly Trap is designed to lure adult fruit flies, using a special non-toxic food-based liquid lure. Flies that enter the trap can't escape to continue breeding. The best part is –the apple shaped trap is really cute and looks at home in any kitchen.

Check out this video to see exactly how to use it:

I really appreciate that this trap is so easy to use.  All you have to do is pull on the little top of the apple, and pour in the liquid, and you are done.  I also really like that the liquid that lures the fruit flies in is nontoxic.  That way, if you accidentally knock it over, you won’t spill toxic ick everywhere. With two little ones in my house, I don’t want anything in our house to be dangerous for them to touch.
The trap is $7.99 and is available at select Wal-Mart, Ace Hardware and True Value stores and online at http://www.terro.com/.

I bet you'd like to win some of these traps to try out. Well, it's your lucky day! We are giving away (2) fruit fly traps to (1) lucky winner!

Tupperware Review

Easy to work with, convenient cooking tools make healthy cooking a lot more enjoyable, don't you think? For instance, I just can't imagine what cooking was like before the blender. That is also how I feel about some of my Tupperware products.

I am sure most, if not all, of you have heard of Tupperware. But did you know: Tupperware brand products made their debut in 1946, the start of a revolutionary post-war period in history. For 60 years, Tupperware brand products have closely followed rollercoaster trends from the suburban movement to the 60's feminist revolution to '90s "cocooning" continually adding a unique organizational touch to the lives and kitchens across the nation.

I grew up with a lot of Tupperware in my kitchen, but when when I started living a more conscious life and learning about toxins, I stopped using Tupperware and started using glass. The reason I did this was because some plastics leach dangerous chemicals into our food, and I don't even want to take a chance with that.

HOWEVER - I recently looked at the safety of Tupperware again, and I feel they have improved over the years, and I think most of their products are safe. You always want to stay away from plastics with a #3 or #7. I also advise against microwaving anything in a plastic container.(Then again, I advise against microwaving anything, period)

Also, I do commend Tupperware for being a very green choice when it comes to storing food. How many plastic baggies are wasted and thrown into landfills after just holding a sandwich or some leftovers? Tupperware can be reused time and time again, and I really appreciate that!

Having said all of that, I want to show you three Tupperware products today that I think are super handy for the kitchen, and I hope they help you do more healthy cooking.

The Chop 'N Prep Chef is the next best thing to a blender or food processor. It is cute and compact, and it is also easy to use. You just pull the cord and it turbo chops fresh herbs, vegetables, berries, cheeses and more in record time. I love how it saves time and effort while eliminating the cost of expensive electricity.  I don't know about you, but I hate chopping fresh herbs by hand, so this is wonderful! I will be using this all the time once my garden is in full bloom. Hmmmm...I can smell the fresh pesto already.

Lately, I have been making my own salad dressing for my lunchtime salads.  It is super easy, tasty and very healthy! I add my extra virgin olive oil, apple cider vinegar and a few herbs into the Quick Shake Container, shake it up, open the lid, and pour. Then, I put it back on the cupboard until the next day, when I just shake and pour again. It is super easy and wayyyy healthier for you than store bought dressings with tons of additives and junk hidden inside.

The Onion Keeper is one of my favorite gadgets. I always had the hardest time finding a container to keep my leftover onion in. Then, once the onion was used up, the container would smell like onions for weeks. Ughh! But, now I am free from the onion odor!! The Onion Keeper has a snap closure that ensures the onions maintain their freshness and flavor while helping you eliminate waste. Genius idea! I love it!
The best part about all of these tools is that they are all reasonably priced, so you can save money, waste less, and live a little greener.  You can find all of these tools under the Cook's Tools section of their website. Head on over, check them out, and make your healthy cooking easier! While you are there, check out their new Eco By Tupperware products.

Navitas Naturals Review

Are you looking to eat more raw foods, vegan foods or just looking for some tasty health super foods? I know I am. Since starting this Healthy Cooking Event, I have been learning so much more about nutrition and what it really means to eat and cook healthfully. All the things I have been learning have inspired me to start cutting all processed and packaged foods out of our family's diet.(which is no easy feat, I know) That means we are eating a ton more raw foods, and raw snack foods and ingredients are not always easy to find. That is why I am so thankful for Navitas Naturals.

Their food philosophy is simple: "Nutrient rich whole foods are best produced using organic agricultural methods with minimal processing. Focusing on both food safety and nutrition, we handle our premium superfoods with care. This includes third party testing for all our products. Our facility is Organic, Kosher and GMP/HACCP Certified. In addition, we utilize methods such as freeze-drying and low temperature processing to ensure maximum nutrition and safety."
"We specialize in organic and wild-crafted functional foods, and strive to lead the industry in this expanding market. Health conscious consumers choose our nutrient-rich products because they are loaded with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Our premium quality “superfoods” are always free of additives and trans fats; the absence of these elements speaking to the purity and effectiveness of the products."

I received their Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Mulberries, and Organic Trail Mix. These foods were all new tastes for me, and I really appreciated learning about these superfoods!

The Organic Cacao Nibs are little partially ground cacao beans that are the natural source of all chocolate products. They have a crunchy texture and intense flavor, and I just love them! You can add them to trail mixes, oatmeal, yogurt or pancakes. But, I even liked them just by themselves as a little treat. With cacao’s soaring levels of antioxidants, and trace minerals like magnesium and iron, they are ultra-healthy! This is a great quality organic chocolate treat that is also vegan and raw!! How great!

The Organic Mulberries were an aquired taste for me. They have a very unique flavor, so I like to eat them with other things. I have starting having them as a snack with raw almonds, and that is a fabulous combination. Again, I love that they are organic, kosher, vegan and raw, and with no added sugar!

The Organic Trail Mix that I tried had three different types of berries: mulberries, goji, and goldenberries, and it also had raw organic cashews, and those tasty cacao nibs. This is delicious!! I especially love the goldenberries. They are scrumptiously sour and sweet! You know how you sometimes have a favorite part of the trail mix that you dig out and eat first, well, that is the goldenberries for me! With no added junk, a lot of flavor and all super healthy ingredients, this is one of the best trail mixes around!

Navitas Naturals has a large variety of products beyond what I have reviewed here. Check them out! One of their products that I am dying to try is their Organic Nori.  Did you know it contains almost 50% protein??

With free shipping on orders over $70, I am going to stock up, so I can save on the shipping and enjoy all their products! Head on over and explore their site! Navitas Naturals has a ton to offer!

Element Bars Review and Giveaway

Are you a snacker? I am. It is really important for us to eat every 3 hours or so to keep our metabolism high. So snacks can be great! But, many foods that are said to be "snack foods" are full of icky preservatives, chemicals, fat and junk. So, get ready to transform your snacking habits, because you are going to love the healthy snack bars I have for you today.

At Element Bars, they believe many people, like us, care about what goes into their bodies. Not only should food nourish our body and soul, it should be made in such a way that sustains our planet. They also understand that we all have different tastes and nutritional needs. So it is important to cater our individual diets to our unique taste and nutritional requirements. Besides being nourishing, they think nutrition bars should be enjoyable and fun! However, with today's busy, modern lifestyle, not everyone has the time to make his or her own nutrition bars.

That is why they invite you to pick and choose the elements (or ingredients) that you want (or don't want) in your nutrition bar. We want to make nutrition personal again by letting you customize your bars to your liking.

Their promise to you:

•Premium Ingredients - The highest quality, all-natural, minimally processed ingredients

•Deliciousness - Our Taste Guarantee

•Freshness - bars fresh out of the oven to your doorstep

•Personal Care - we will make your ElementBars experience perfect

I tried out some of their most popular bars - Detox Therapy, Fuel Up and Go, Choco-lata-fun, and The Cherry Dates Nuts. I really like that there were no unpronounceable names of ingredients in the labels of these nutrition bars.  I knew every single thing that was in them! They always only use all-natural ingredients that are either unprocessed or have been minimally processed to best preserve each ingredient's nutritional benefits. Thank you!

My favorite part about Element Bars is that you can build your own bar!! You first pick what you want as the core. I like the oaty core the best. Then, you can choose if you want it organic. Of course, I chose yes! After the core, you can add more ingredients like fruit, nuts, sweets or boosts. As you keep changing your bar, you can watch the nutrition facts for your bar change to fit what you added. How cool is that?

If you don't want to build your own bar, but still want a bar that fits your needs, you can always take the quiz to help you find the bar that matches up best with you. After I took the quiz, it said that the bar for me was the Fuel Up and Go, which is one of my favorites anyways!

Another cool feature? You can save your bar combinations, so the next time you want to re-order, you can do it really easily!

The only thing that disappoints me about Element Bars is that not all of the ingredients are completely organic. I especially wish the seeds and nuts were, since they are such powerfoods! Otherwise, I am a fan of Element Bars, and I think they are a healthy replacement for many of those junk food snacks that you may be tempted to reach for when you are hungry.

You can order a box of their popular bars for $1.99/bar, which is $23.88 a box. Or, you can design your own bar for $2.99/bar, which is $35.88 a box.

Guess what? Yes, you guessed it! One of my lucky readers is going to win a box of 12 custom bars! How awesome is that?

Your Health In Your Hands Book Review

The book I am introducing you to today is a perfect fit for my Healthy Cooking Event. I just know you are going to love it, and I hope each one of you think about getting it, because it will change the way you think about food!!

Your Health in Your Hands is a practical workbook taking you on a journey to understanding foods, how they effect your health and what we call aging. It exposes health and empowers women to take actions and make attitude changes that will affect the quality of your well being in the area of physical health and weight loss. Weight loss alone is difficult if you are just disciplining yourself without understanding. This book develops an understating of principals and strategies that will support lifestyle changes that keep the weight off and you feeling great. The book also includes delicious whole foods recipes to help you directly apply your new knowledge into your life.

The author, Kat Wright, ND, says, "My goal is to help you see what is in the way of permanent and lasting results, implement the necessary habits and create a life of health...I started teaching and coaching wellness principals, macrobiotics and cooking classes to others in 1982. I had seen such a transformation in my husband and my own health after switching our lifestyle habits to a natural health supporting system that I could not help but want to share with others."
I really respect Kat's mission, and I see myself a lot in her. The same things that have motivated Kat to share  health and natural living with others is what motivates me to share those same things with all of you, my readers.

I have got to say - I love, love, loved this book, and I agree with it all 100%. Not only does she know what she is talking about in respect to nutrition, health and aging well, she inspires and gives you the tools to empower you to make changes in your own life. That is what sets this book apart from many other health books. There are sections throughout the whole book where you make different committments to your health and then sign and date it to hold yourself accountable.

The book also has an area for you to journal about what you consume, great foods and recipes to use, and a page for you to commit to your "I am" statement. This is something that you say out loud, write down, expand and make it your own and live it!! Her example (which I LOVE) is "I am living life responsibly and intentionally! I am moving in the direction of optimum health in body, mind and spirit. I eat nutrient-dense foods, exercise my body and mind, take time to rest, and I enjoy family, friends, and work."

I really appreciate all Kat has given us in her book. I recommend it to everyone, and I truly hope you take a moment to commit to your own health goals today.

You can buy this book online here for $24.95. It is an awesome investment in your health! Also check out all the other things that Kat has to offer. She is a wealth of knowledge!

Almondina Review

Let's talk about another tasty healthy snacking option today. What would you say about a cookie that only has 30 calories? I knew that would get your attention! I want to introduce you to a company that is committed to offering natural, healthy cookies with a generations old family recipe - Almondina.

Almondina is the inspiring success story of a man, Yuval Zaliouk, whose great loves include both music and wonderful food. For generations his family loved his grandmother Dina's most secret cookie, which she called Petit Gateau Sec. Yuval Zaliouk, an internationally known symphony conductor and gourmet chef, always had a special place in his heart (and stomach) for this exquisite, crispy wafer with the delicate flavor of roasted almonds and the natural sweetness of plump raisins. That is why he decided to create the Almondina treats from this secret family recipe, and he introduced it to the market in 1989.
So, what exactly are Almondina cookies?  They are a gourmet cookie, health food and snack, all in one. Almondina - The Delicious Cookie Without the Guilt, this all-natural, crispy almond cookie has no cholesterol and no added fat, salt, or preservatives and has only 30 calories. Also, after checking with the company, I found out Almondinas have NO GM ingredients in them either. Thank you!

At first, I thought they were like biscotti, and that you would only want to eat them dipped in coffee or some other liquid. But, they aren't. I have been just snacking on them plain, and they are great! They are full of the great natural taste of almonds, raisins and other spices. And they are not too crunchy either. I hate it when you feel like your teeth are going to break when you bite into something, but that is not the case here.

They come in lots of different varieties, and each one is just as good as the last.

• Original - America's all natural favorite with almonds and raisins
• New - Chocolate Cherry - We combined the world's finest dark chocolate
with plump cherries to produce an irresistible, decadent treat without guilt.
• Choconut - Rich tasting crunchy chocolate, but low in calories
• Cinnaroma - The original biscuit for cinnamon lovers
• Gingerspice - Trend setting, with chunks of Australian ginger
• AlmonDuo - Double-nut wonder with almonds and pistachios
• AnniversaryT - Award winning delight with a touch of anise
• NEW - BranTreats - Made with oat bran and the finest cinnamon "Cookies For Breakfast"
• Sesame - Irresistible, exotic, flavorful
- Seasonal - Pumpkin Spice - A seasonal attraction with a delightful touch of fall spices combined with the highest quality almonds and pepitas(pumpkin seeds)

If I had to choose my favorite, I guess it would be a tie between the Original and the Chocolate Cherry. The dried fruit inside of each of these varities is perfectly chewy and goes great with the crispiness of the cookie. And I just love the almond chunks inside all the Almondinas.

They are great as a snack, crumbled on top of ice cream, dipped into hot chocolate or coffee, or I even like them cumbled in my oatmeal.
Almondina cookies are sold in all 50 States and several foreign countries.  Almondina distribution has expanded and is now readily available at stores such as Kroger, A&P, Winn Dixie, Publix, Food Lion, Market Basket, JH Harvey and Blooms, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, TJ Maxx/Marshalls and many others. Or you can order them online.

The GoodOnYa Bar Review and Giveaway

In my search for healthy organic food, I have found that there are a lot of companies that like to pose as healthy and make you think that they are good for you just because they are organic or natural. However, you have to really dig into what is inside their products and where they get their ingredients to find the real truth.

Today, I want to introduce you to the GoodOnYa bar. I am really excited to be able to assure you all that these bars are the best of the best, and you don't need to worry about eating anything fake or unhealthy when you bite into these bars.

But, don't take my word for it. Go ahead and check them out and if you have any questions, ask Kris Fillat, the founder of the GoodOnYa bar. She is extremely knowledgeable about her products, and she has worked hard to make sure she is bringing you the best! As Kris says, "It’s not just about selling bars for us, we are passionate about learning, sharing nutrition info and helping people. We love what we are doing in business because healthy, organic living is who we are as people."

I received a sample of all three of their bars - Peanut Butter Honey, Breakfast Bar, and Peanut Butter Chocolate.

The Peanut Butter Honey is made of organic valencia peanut butter, organic raw honey, wonderful organic seeds and more. It has a whopping 10 grams of protein to help keep you full, and it is the perfect snack for after a workout or during an afternoon slump.

The Breakfast Bar includes tasty ingredients like pure organic maple syrup, organic raisins, organic raw hemp seeds, and more. It has 8 grams of protein to start your day off on the right foot, and it has 28% of your daily fiber in just this one bar! Awesome, right?

The Peanut Butter Chocolate is my favorite, because it combines some of my all time favorite ingredients - peanut butter, dark chocolate and honey. It also has 10 grams of protein, so it is going to keep you full for awhile instead of send you off on a craving for more. So yummy!

These bars are not only really healthy, with NO GMO's, No Soy, No Dairy, No Gluten, mostly raw, tons of fiber, protein, and iron, they are also very tasty and very filling. They are pretty much everything I want in a snack bar.

Oh, and did I mention what a green company they are? Good golly, they have a whole list of what they are doing to help make our planet that much healthier. From banning plastic bags to using no harsh soaps, they are awesome in this area too!

You can purchase the snack bar sample pack or buy them by the box.

Guess what? One of my lovely readers is going to win this same snack bar sampler pack in our giveaway!

Newman's Own Organics Review and Giveaway

Everyone loves to snack, including myself. When I first started learning about organic food and changing over the food in my kitchen, Newman's Own Organics was one of the first companies I tried out. So, I am very excited to introduce you to them today!

When Nell Newman and business partner Peter Meehan started Newman’s Own Organics: The Second Generation in 1993, they were sure there was a market for organic snack foods, but they couldn’t have anticipated just how fast the demand for their products would grow. What started with pretzels and grew to include other snack foods has now expanded to many other organic items: coffee, tea, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, organic dried fruit, and pet food.

Newman’s Own Organics' products meet all the requirements of the USDA’s National Organic Program. Ingredients have been grown on farms that have not used artificial fertilizers or pesticides for three years or more. The farms and processors have also met the USDA’s organic standards.

"Great tasting food that happens to be organic," is the slogan of the company, and I can attest to their slogan being very true!

My all time favorite product of Newman's Own Organics is their chocolate bar. Since I am a major chocolate lover, I am always on the lookout for organic chocolates. Being a frugal mom, I am also looking for organic chocolate that we can afford. Their chocolates meet both criteria. They come in flavors like dark chocolate, super dark chocolate, mocha milk chocolate, espresso dark chocolate, milk chocolate and orange dark chocolate. Yummm!

I also love their Alphabet cookies! They are tasty and crunchy, and I love that the list of ingredients is quite short. One thing that sets these cookies apart is that they use organic palm fruit oil, which is different than a lot of other companies.

Organic palm fruit oil:

Is extracted from the palm's fruit not the palm's kernel.
It is not hydrogenated.
Contains no trans-fatty acids.
Is lower in saturated fat than butter and has no cholesterol.
Can be grown organically in tropical regions.

At only three grams of fat per serving, I can't help but love these cookies. They come in three flavors - Chocolate, Arrowroot, and Cinnamon Graham. You can feel good sharing these cookies with your children too, knowing you are not giving them a bunch of icky chemicals and preservatives.

Of course, I also love the Fig Newmans. They are the organic version of Fig Newtons, only better! Fig Newmans are available in fat free, low fat, and wheat-free/dairy free varieties.

Am I making your mouth water yet??

I have one more product of theirs that I have to highlight - Soy Crisps. Soy Crisps are a new addition to their snack food line. Gluten free, they are made with organic soy and organic rice. The Crisps come in four varieties: Cinnamon Sugar, White Cheddar, Lightly Salted, and Barbecue, and have between 7 and 9 grams of protein depending on the variety. My favorite was either the Barbecue or Lightly Salted.

Besides the snacks I mentioned, Newman's Own Organics also has several varieties of Pretzels, Champion Chip Cookies, Newman-O's, Dried Fruit, Mints, and Hermits. All of these are very tasty! Trust me, you won't even know they are that much healthier for you! You will be too busy enjoying every bite!

Newman's Own Organics are sold in retailers all over the country. Click here to find the store nearest you.

For (1) lucky reader of mine, we are giving away all (4) of the products I have highlighted today - Organic Chocolate Bars, Organic Alphabet Cookies, Organic Fig Newmans and Organic Soy Crisps. Yum, Yum, Yum!!

Tropical Traditions Organic Atchara Review and Giveaway

What in the world is Atchara?

That is the question I was wondering as I came across Tropical Traditions Organic Atchara. Turns out, it is  a traditional Philippine fermented dish made with unripe raw green papaya, fresh raw ginger root, and other raw ingredients in a vinegar base. As kimchi is to the Koreans, chutney to the Indians, and sauerkraut is to the Germans, so atchara is a traditional fermented dish valued in Philippine culture.

The first thought that came to my mind after I read that was, "This stuff is amazingly healthy!" Fermented food has a very high nutritional content, not to mention that papaya, ginger, garlic and the raw coconut water vinegar are also very healthy ingredients.

Plus, Tropical Traditions is committed to time-honored traditional practices, and I trust their products to be some of the highest quality to be found. While most of the atchara available in the Philippines is made with distilled vinegar, Tropical Traditions decided to develop its own raw vinegar which is fermented from coconut water - the water inside coconuts. After several years of research, they successfully fermented their organic coconut water into a healthy vinegar rich in all the minerals available in coconut water, and stable enough to keep it raw with the mother of vinegar present. This is truly a raw and "live" food that has NOT been pasteurized. All of the ingredients are organic and supplied by small-scale family farmers, so you are supporting families in the Philippines when you purchase Tropical Traditions Atchara.

So, what does Atchara taste like? Well, it is very unique. I would say it tastes like a good stir fry that has ginger and garlic in it. It is a little sweet and a little sour. My son and husband go gonzo for it just plain. I like it better served with rice and stir fry or chicken.

I am just thrilled to have found such a great healthy product to add to my family's meals. You just can't beat Atchara when it comes to adding live enzymes and nutrients to your meals! And at only 28 calories and NO FAT per serving, it adds a lot of flavor without hardly any calories or fat.

You can purchase Atchara for $12.99 for a 16 oz. jar right on the website.

All of you can get your own complimentary copy of their Virgin Coconut Oil book by taking part in their Referral Program. When you make your first order, please choose “Referred by a Friend” and enter my User ID: 6904404 on your first online order. The book will then be automatically added to your order. Here is a link to their customer service page so you can email them if you need some help placing your first web order to capture the free book.

Plus, we are giving away (1) 16 oz. jar of Atchara to (1) Lucky Winner!!

Daelicious! Cookbook Review

I wanted to kick off my Healthy Cooking event with one of my new favorite cookbooks, "Daelicious! Recipes For Vibrant Living," written by Dr. Daemon Jones.

Daemon Jones, ND “Dr. Dae” is a naturopathic physician and author of this cookbook. Dr. Dae is passionate about helping everyone live there most vibrant, healthy and energetic life. She combines her nutritional expertise with her knowledge of medicine and natural therapies to create safe and effective treatment plans that bring her patients back to vibrant health.  Dr. Dae is a member of the Nutritional Magnesium Association at http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org/.

In this cookbook, Dr. Dae shows people how to use food as medicine in their own lives, which I love! In the beginning of her book, she states, "To all those people who want to eat well and are afraid it's just not going to taste good. Surprise!" I totally agree with her! That is why I am having this Healthy Cooking Event, because I want to help you see that you can enjoy healthy, easy-to-cook food!

Daelicious! is not only a practical guide full of easy recipes. It also has a section in the back with Food Lifestyles, which are plans that she uses in her practice to help others achieve the healthy they desire.  They aren't fad diets. They are ways of living and eating that will improve and sustain good health. I decided to try out the Detoxification Diet, which is basically a vegan diet that also cuts out all refined and processed foods, canned foods, frozen juices, roasted and salted nuts, and all the other junk that builds up toxins in your body.
She wants you to follow this diet for a specific period of time, like 2 weeks, and then pick up one of the other healthy food lifestyles.

So, I have been doing the Detox Diet for a week now. I love it!! I never thought I could even get past a day, but I have done a whole week, and I feel great! Besides losing weight, my skin is clearer, I feel great, and I'm beginning to treat food a little differently than I have in the past. I now realize even more that it is fuel for your body, not something to calm your nerves, give you a little sugar high, or help you veg out in front of the TV.

I really liked that the food lifestyles in the back go with the rest of the cookbook. At the bottom of each recips is a key that explains which food lifestyles the recipe will support. That helped me plan my meals for the week, because I just look through and found some of the recipes that looked the yummiest and made sure they fit in with the Detox lifestyle. Some of the meals I made were Super Simple Guacamole, Bella Burgers, and Steamed Broccoli. All of them were fantastic and a hit with my whole family!

I highly recommend this book to all of you! It will help you see food differently and give you some awesome recipes to try with your family!

You can find the book here for $19.95.

The Dangers of GMOs

Have you heard the words genetically modified or genetically engineered? How about GMO's(Genetically Modified Organisms)? You may not know what that means or how it affects you and your health, so I hope to help you learn about it all today. This is something that is REALLY important, so please take a moment and read how this affects you.

Genetic Engineering(GE) or Genetic Modification(GM) of food involves the laboratory process of artificially inserting genes into the DNA of food crops or animals. The result is a GMO. What they are doing is merging the DNA from different species, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. I don't know about you, but that doesn't sit well with me!
Studies are showing a correlation between consumption of GMOs and an array of health risks. Dr. Mercola says, "Thousands of genetically modified products are now on the market, creating potentially life-threatening problems, but no one knows what to look out for. Why? Because no one knows the full extent of what happens to the end product when you splice in new genes. The only thing that is guaranteed is that it will create surprise side effects…It may also create brand new diseases that we’ve never seen before, in addition to spurring on the disease rate of some we already have, such as cancer."

Can you believe this statistic? You have a 75 percent chance of picking a food with genetically modified ingredients in the United States. This is because at least seven out of every 10 items have been genetically modified!

Unfortunately, it is hard for us to know exactly what we are buying in the grocery stores any more. The US doesn't require labeling of GMOs, so it is up to you, again, as the consumer to educate yourself and make good choices for your health and your family's health! You just have to stand up for yourself and your health!
Here are 4 tips for avoiding GMOs:

1. Buy Organic. Certified organic products cannot intentionally contain any GMO ingredients.
2. Look for Non-GMO project verified seals. The Non-GMO project is a non-profit organization committed to providing consumers with clearly labeled and independently verified non-GMO choices. Visit their website for great information!!
3. Avoid At-Risk Ingredients. Avoid products that are made with ingredients that might be derived from GMOs. GM food crops are CORN, CANOLA, COTTON, FLAX, PAPAYA, RICE, SOY, SUGAR BEETS, ZUCCHINI, YELLOW SUMMER SQUASH. There are also a ton more ingredients that are derived from these risk crops such as: ascorbic acid, maltodextrins, xanthan gum, yeast products, and more. Also, watch out for milk, meat, eggs, and honey because of their potential GMO contamination in feed and other inputs.
4.Check out the Non GMO Shopping Guide, and only choose products listed there. You can also download the FREE ShopNoGMO iphone app at the iTunes store.

Shoot me an email or write a comment if you have any questions about this topic. Check out the resources I included in this article, and educate yourself about what you are putting in your body!!

Set Goals and Conquer Them!

Whether it is weight loss, living a healthier life, being a better parent, getting in shape, or whatever area of your life you are working on improving, it is VITAL to have goals! One of the things I always do for my personal training clients is help them make a goal list. After making their goal list, then we also make a motivation list to help keep them on track.

A key factor in accomplishing your goals is what is going on in your head. You can sabotage or help accomplish your own goals with your thoughts. Wouldn't you rather use those thoughts for your advantage?

The first way to do this is to THINK POSITIVE!! If you are always thinking about how you can't, can't, can't, you will never see your own potential. Retrain your brain. Every time you catch yourself thinking negatively, turn that thought around into a positive thought. It is amazing what you can do when you really believe in yourself! I have found that so many people are just too harsh on themselves and don't really give themselves the full potential to succeed at their goals, and this starts with your thoughts. So, right at the top of your goal list in big letters, write BE POSITIVE!

Next, let's talk about visualization. It's easier to be successful at achieving your goals if you have a clear picture in your head of you achieving exactly what you want. Your unconscious is powerful and when you are visualizing victory, your unconscious is becoming more and more convinced. So, draw a picture on the back of your goals sheet of what achieving your goal looks like.

Lastly, don't dwell on the disappointments. It just won't get you anywhere to focus on what you aren't doing or being.  When I get down on myself, I notice that it zaps my energy. Not to mention how it brings others down, and you could use their positive support! So, make sure you always have a running list in your head of what you are thankful for or proud of.

Don't be your own worst enemy and defeat yourself before you begin. You hold a lot of power in your thoughts, and YOU CAN DO IT! There is a reason they always say "you can do it if you put your mind to it".

Now, get going!

Olympics Goes Green!

Now that the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics has been named (Rio de Janeiro), the talk has begun on who will take the bid for the 2022 Winter Games. And besides that there has been even more talk about the changes that are expected to be seen in these future Olympic games.

With the International Olympics Committee naming Andrew Liveris DOW CEO and DOW Chemical as the official sponsor of the Olympics for the next decade, they have taken a serious step towards making the event more environmentally friendly. The IOC President, Jacques Rogge believes the overall commitment that DOW has to advancement, sustainability, and corporate responsibility parallels the Olympic Movement of peace, progress, and international collaboration.

Why are these changes so crucial? As fantastic and unifying as the Olympics are, it's quite a carbon-rich event. It has been estimated that over 2/3 of the carbon emissions from the event is a result of some of the 1.5+ million attendees traveling to and from the event.

USOC members are looking to do more by following the lead of the 2008 Summer Games, held in Beijing. The summer Olympics made great efforts to showcase conservation practices and sustainable energy sources. Exactly what environmentally friendly services did the Olympic facilities feature?

• Solar power - Used to light lawns, courtyards and streets at several venues, including the Olympic Village. A 130 KW photovoltaic system illuminated The National Stadium, where events such as athletics and football were held.

• Water Conservation - Waste water collected from the Qinghe sewage treatment plant was filtered and used for the various heating and cooling needs throughout the Olympics site, yielding a 60% savings in electricity. Rainwater was collected from around the grounds, collecting over 75,000 gallons by using water permeable bricks, pipes and wells installed on roofs, roads and green areas.

• Natural Light - Remember the famous 'Water Cube' where the aquatic events were held? The walls of the National Aquatics Centre provided natural light, and for the interior of the building, specially designed 'beam-pipes' funneled sunlight into corridors, toilets and car parks at venues, including the Olympic Green.

• Recycling - The 2008 Olympic hosts aimed for a 50 per cent recycling of waste including paper, metals and plastics at venues. A modest expectation, considering that a test run carried out during the 11th World Softball Championships held in 2007, achieved a nearly 90 per cent recycling rate.

This green vision that started in 2008, which had great new ways of filtration and insulation for the events, has progressed to include dozens of other products which will help reduce waste and promote conservation. You can expect these products to appear at the coming events over the next decade and be a part of the USOC recommendations and many commentators are reporting whispers that if the United States wins the 2022 bid there will be major steps toward a sustainable and green powered 2022 Olympic games.

Thanks to Nerissa Barry for this great article!

Nicki's Diapers/Best Bottom Diapers Review and Giveaway

If you are looking for a cloth diaper that doesn't leak, you are going to want to read this review! I have used way too many diapers that leak - either from the top, back, sides, or through the cover.  Today, let me introduce you to my absolute favorite diaper in our family's collection - the Best Bottom diaper!

Let me take a few steps back and explain how this diaper came about. Nicki's Diapers is a business founded and run by a mom. This small business was started to fill a gap in the cloth diapering services available within our local community and it has since grown into this website helping parents around the United States and world. They carry tons of things you will need for cloth diapering, babywearing, nursing and soooo much more.

After years of experience, Nicki, the owner of Nicki's Diapers, created a new diaper taking the pros of all the different diapering systems and eliminated the cons. This resulted in the best cloth diaper system available - trimmest fitting and highly absorbent! To help reduce early confusion and that overwhelmed feeling when researching cloth diapers, the Best Bottom diaper has simplified cloth diapering while making one of the most economical systems. The Best Bottom one size diapering system is not a pocket diaper, not an all in one, not a fitted diaper and not a prefold system...it is the best of all types!

I received the cutest shell ever, the pink giraffe, and one overnight and two stay dry inserts. I love that this is a one size diaper system, which saves you even more money and hassle. My favorite part is that the shell can be reused! You don't have to wash it every time you change your baby. You can use the same shell for several diaper changes, because you just change out the insert.

For the overnight, you first snap in the overnight insert, and then you snap in the regular insert on the top of that. Super easy to do! And these diapers really keep your little one's clothes clean!! I have NEVER had any leaks with this diaper. And that means this diaper gets two huge thumbs up from me!

There are so many really cute shells to choose from too. Like I said, I chose the pink giraffe, and isn't it so cute?
You can see that my daughter just loves this diaper!
Nicki's Diapers is a really great place to shop for all your baby's needs and support a smaller business. There are tons of sales going on, and she gives free shipping on lots of different items, including this Best Bottom diaper! Yay! Head on over there and pick out your favorite products. I hope you find yourself as excited as I was as I was checking out all the products she offers at such great prices and with such great deals!

Now, for some more exciting news - we are giving away (1) shell, (2) stay dry inserts, and (1) overnight insert to (1) very lucky reader!!
