Thirsties Cloth Diaper Review and Giveaway

We are almost exclusively cloth diapering our 3 month old daughter, and it is so much easier than with our first child. Perhaps it is because I am not really phased anymore by poopy diapers, or maybe it is just that I am getting better at cleaning them with more practice. I do know this - cloth diapers are getting handier and more efficient at their job with every new diaper I get.

Today, let me introduce you to ThirstiesThirsties is a small cloth diaper company committed to greener parenting and Eco Friendly solutions, not to mention 100% USA Made quality! Erin, founder of Thirsties, started this business with an old sewing machine and $100 in 2004. Through her hard work and diligence, the company is now one of the leaders in the cloth diaper industry. Their diapers are now made by work at home mothers, very close to our warehouse, reducing our carbon output. Our customer service reps are experienced cloth diapering moms, and offer our knowledge to our retailers and customers alike. I think this is a huge part of what sets Thirsties apart from other cloth diaper companies! And I love the goal they are working hard at - to become carbon neutral!! Thank you to Thirsties for being so eco-friendly!

I received a Duo Wrap and Duo Hemp Prefold. I have never used a prefold diaper before, so I was interested to see how it compared.

First off, I will say the Duo Hemp Prefold was very soft and dried quickly, which I appreciate. I have to dry some of my cloth diapers out on my line for the whole day or twice in my dryer. But, not these! Their Duo Hemp Prefolds are designed for the freer flow of air and washing water-each panel is only 2 layers thick, permitting thorough cleansing with little effort and quick drying times. Plus, get this - hemp has natural antimicrobial properties, is many times more durable, and is more absorbent than cotton. Yay for hemp!

I chose the rose colored Duo Wrap with snap closures in size one, which fits babies 6-18 pounds. I like how you can adjust the snaps to fit your baby as he/she grows. Also, I really appreciate that this wrap is free of VOC's, PVC, phthalates, lead and latex. It does keep out leaks quite well, unless you leave it on too long.

These diapers are great, and when you purchase them, you are supporting a really awesome company, in my humble opinion. If you would like a free catalog, you can request one here. Check out all of Thirsties products, and then find a retailer near you!

For one of my lovely readers, we are offering a giveaway of (1) Duo Wrap and (1) Duo Hemp Prefold. How awesome is that?

  3. I don't have any cloth diapering stories yet because I am still learning and getting ready to make the switch, but I used to always think cloth diapering was still how my mom used to do it (plain white cloths with big clothes pins!) I was surprised it has evolved into something so stylish and a bit easier.

  9. I once went to change my 1 year old son and found that my husband had put his bottom bumpers size snapping diaper on backwards:) It didn't even leak! But I have no idea how he got it on that way or thought it looked comfortable for my son.

  22. funny story....hmmm..

I went to visit my family in Minnesota. Stayed with my sister, who has a 19 moth old, uses sposies. I was not allowed to wash lo's diapers in their machine. Luckily my Aunt thought my sister was being anal and left me use her washer!!

No big deal, I have traveled to Hawaii with cloth diapers...

  33. My favorite story about cloth diapering is when we were at my friends house with a group of friends and their kids. My BFF's 3 year old daughter went to go "potty" and while she was in the potty she discovered the diaper sprayer. When her mom went in to wipe, she sprayed her down with the sprayer!

  40. Funny cloth diapering story? Once when my 2 year old was very little, I forgot to pack an extra diaper and she soaked through before we headed home. I had to wrap her little bottom in an extra onesie and pray she didn't pee too much on the way home!

  47. Funny Story: My Mom was babysitting at bedtime and I left her the simplest diaper combo, a Thirsties duo fab fitted(which I pre-stuffed with extra absorbency to last all night) and a little beetle wool wrap(with easy hook and loop closures and everything!) I came home a couple hours later to a very wet baby and bed. She has the wool wrap scrunched up in the crotch area with some of the fitted exposed. The craziest part was that the fitted was somehow pulled up really high in the front and the top edge of the wool wrap was somehow about 3 inches lower(then half way up his back in the back)! Uhm, Mom, The cover has to COVER the diaper... LOL seriously??? Bless her heart!

  50. My first time trying cloth diapers I did not have the fit just right on the fuzzibuns and my daughter must have known this and she pooped out the side, the front, the back and down her legs. It was a mess, but all I could do was laugh because as I put the diaper on I knew it was too loose.

Next thing I hear is him yelling because our daughter got her hands and feet into the open dirty diaper. I tell him all the time that she is quick with her hands but he obviously didn't believe me. made my morning.

Apparently he did a pretty good job though, and without any instructions!

Well, I've only been CDing for about 2 weeks, but earlier this week, my daughter had beefaroni, and the following day, she had a horrid orange poop. I freaked out like crazy because she stained one of my pockets and I couldn't get the orange out. Thankfully the nice people at diaperpin.com mentioned that you can sun diapers through the window, and the stain is mostly faded now. (Have to wait for another sunny day to finish getting it out)

  158. My story: when we started cloth diapering with our (now 2yo) newborn, we didn't do our research and assumed CDing was still prefolds/flats and plastic pants. We bought gerber prefolds and it was a disaster! After dealing with leaks for a few months, we gave up until I found CDing blogs, learned of modern cloth diapering and won a BG 4.0! I was hooked from that point on!

  170. Funny story:
We are new to cloth diapers so I went to a local store to take a look at different options. They had me try the one on my DS that I was looking to buy, but it didn't fit. So I took it off, started to pull the insert out of that one to put into the smaller one to try on my DS, and peed ALL over! He peed on their mat, the floor, both diapers, his clothes, and my leg. The other lady in the room with me felt the need to inform me that I had pee on me. So did the employee who I asked for something to clean it up, and the lady who saw me cleaning it, and the lady who overheard me telling my mom. I guess they thought I didn't know I was covered in pee???

  171. I learned that you don't have to unstuff a thirsties fitted before washing it because they have a front opening too.

  175. Story:
When we first started using a Snappi on our prefolds there were a few times where the cover was accidentally ommitted before dressing the baby. Fortunately we were at home and it was easy to change the clothing involved.

  178. Funny story: my first diaper I made turned out very wrong! I think I forgot to put in a seat allowance, so it is TINY. Then my soaker for it was definitely not enough layers. I put the snaps on after I sewed it together, so now the insert can't go into the pocket. Lastly, I ran out of elastic so only half of the waistband is done!

When my brother was little, I was just learning how to change is diaper (old school prefolds and pull up rubber pants) and I thought I'd gotten the pin through all the layers...but I didn't. Minutes later he was diaperless and had painted the wall with poop.
